- USS Franklin arrived in the Mariana Islands area; she was to remain through 22 Jul 1944 to launch strikes against Japanese position on Rota and Guam islands. ww2dbase [Franklin | CPC]
- USS Tang sank the 39,100-ton Japanese transport Dori Maru off Dalian, China at about 0300 hours with two torpedoes. With this sinking, she obtained the record of the greatest total tonnage sunk by an American submarine during one war patrol. ww2dbase [Tang | CPC]

- Chaim Weizmann, the future Israeli president, messaged British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden, requesting the rail lines leading to Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland to be bombed. ww2dbase [Discovery of Concentration Camps and the Holocaust | CPC]
- Captain Yujiro Takarada was named the commanding officer of light carrier Hosho. ww2dbase [Hosho | CPC]

- After the escort carrier USS Card’s task group engaged and sank German submarine U-233, escort ships USS Baker and Thomas transferred 30 German prisoners to Card, including U-233’s badly wounded commanding officer Kapitänleutnant Hans Steen. - Colonel (temporary Lieutenant General) George Patton, Jr. secretly flew into the Cotentin Peninsula in France. ww2dbase [George Patton | AC]
- Wing Commamner Leonard Cheshire led a "Tallboy" attack on the V-3 gun structure at Mimoyecque. After this mission, the last of his fourth tour, he was ordered to rest (he never flew operations again) and two months later he was awarded the Victoria Cross. ww2dbase [Bombing of Cities in France and Low Countries | Mimoyecque, Nord-Pas-de-Calais | AC]
- The USAAF 306th Bomb Group flying from RAF Thurleigh launched a raid against rocket launching sites in the Pas-de-Calais region of France but returned without bombing due to inability to positively identify the target. This was also the day that RAF Thurleigh received a visit from British royalty. HM King George VI, HM Queen Elizabeth, HRH Princess Elizabeth, and courtiers arrived accompanied by Eighth Air Force Commander General Jimmy Doolittle. - Baron Hiroshi Oshima, the Japanese ambassador to Berlin, unaware that his reports were being read by the cryptanalysts in Bletchley Park in Britain, told Tokyo that the German high command was still awaiting for George Patton's army group to land in the Pas de Calais, France. - The Heinkel aircraft of German III/KG3 launched 8 V-1 flying bombs into England, United Kingdom during the night. This squadron lost two planes during take off from their base at Rosi?res, France when they collided on the runway, one crew member was killed. 418 Squadron RAF, flying Mosquito VI aircraft, brought down 12 flying bombs most of them over the cliffs of Beachy Head on the East Sussex coast, while further south after dark, 605 Squadron, flying the Mosquito VI night fighters, shot down 7.
