The Type L anti-tank hand grenades were introduced into Italian Army service in 1940. They were made by the firm Odero Terni Orlando, which also supplied the Italian Army with OTO Model 35 fragmentation grenades. Type L grenades each had a red cylindrical container holding 1,500 grams of TNT, attached to a wooden throwing handle. Each grenade had just enough charge to destroy or knock out the tracks of a target tank, thus rendering it immobile and vulnerable to further attacks. The charge was set off when the grenade made impact. They remained in service until 1945.
