Japanese Emperor Visited Iwoto (Iwo Jima)
The Japanese Emperor and Empress traveled to the island of Iwoto, formerly pronounced as Iwo Jima, on 7 Apr 2025 and visited two war memorials and a cemetery. The 1945 battle on this small island resulted in approximately 21,000 Japanese and 7,000 American deaths. The visit marked the first of a series of visits to commemorate the 80th anniversary since the end of WW2. The Emperor is scheduled to visit Okinawa and Hiroshima in Jun and Nagasaki in Sep.
