ww2dbaseThe 10.5 cm Leichtgeschütz 42 recoilless guns were the successors to weapons manufacturer Rheinmetall's earlier 7.5 cm LG 40 recoilless guns, which were used to effectiveness during the Battle of Crete in 1941, but left much to be desired. Although rival firm Krupp developed the 10.5 cm LG 40 design first, Rheinmetall's 10.5 cm LG 42 design was also placed into production, and Rheinmetall's design ended up with more weapons produced. 10.5 cm LG 42 guns were basically enlarged and upgraded versions of the 7.5-cm predecessors, but with several key improvements such as the capability to be broken down to four individual parts for para-drop operations, and the sharing of shells with the 10.5 cm leFH 18 light howitzers. Production of the design lasted from 1942 until 1944. Most of the 10.5 cm LG 42 guns, together with the similar 10.5 cm LG 40 guns built by Krupp, were deployed to independent light artillery gun battalions that fought with the 20th Mountain Army in Finland and Army Group Center in Russia.
