US Women's Army Corps "Six Triple Eight" Awarded with Congressional Gold Medal

30 Apr 2025

The US Women's Army Corps 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, nicknamed the "Six Triple Eight", was an all-female, predominantly-Black, and multi-ethnic battalion that was given the task of clearing a backlog of 17 million pieces of undelivered mail. At Birmingham, England, United Kingdom, the battalion finished what was supposed to be a six-month task in three months, completing the task in May 1945. On 12 Feb 2021, US Senators Jerry Moran and Jacky Rosen introduced the legislation to award the unit the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor (alongside the Presidential Medal of Freedom), followed by the companion legislation in the lower house by US Representative Gwen Moore. The bill was signed into law by US President Joe Biden on 14 Mar 2022, and the presentation ceremony took place on 29 Apr 2025.
