ww2dbaseThe Gewehr 41 semi-automatic rifles, also and perhaps more popularly known as the G41 semi-automatic rifles, were developed by two firms, Mauser and Walther, with some differences. As time would tell, the Mauser design, G41(M), was a failure, and production ceased after only 6,673 were produced, of which 1,673 were returned as unusable. Thus the Walther design remained to supply the German Army the badly needed semi-automatic infantry weapons, which manufactured somewhere between 40,00 to 145,000 G41(W) rifles. The G41(W) semi-automatic rifles, however, were far from perfect, as the gas mechanism were prone to failures when not kept in perfectly clean shape, which was difficult even during lulls in combat. In 1943, the G41(W) design received an upgrade, which became the Gewehr 43 line of semi-automatic rifles.
