ww2dbaseThe Type 98 50 mm mortars entered service with the Japanese Army in 1938. They were smooth-bore, muzzle-loading launchers. They each had a rectangular and sectionalized base plate and fixed bipod. They primary fired 6.4-kilogram (14-pound 2-ounce) stick bombs that each contained about 3.2 kilograms (about 7 pounds) of picric acid. The bombs were propelled by silk bags filled with black powder. These mortars had a fixed elevation of about 40 degrees. The maximum range was 455 meters (498 yards).
