ww2dbaseThe Type 100 submachine guns were Japan's only submachine gun used during WW2, resulted from Japanese Army's neglect for weapons of this type through most of the 1930s. The Type 100/40 design was completed in 1939 and entered service between 1941 and 1942. The infantry version of Type 100/40 had solid wooden rifle-style stocks, while the paratrooper version had hinged folding stocks. A total of 10,000 Type 100/40 weapons were built. They were used by the paratroopers deployed in the Dutch East Indies early in the Pacific War and other actions. The enhanced variant, Type 100/44, was completed in 1944. These new weapons had a higher firing rate of 800 rounds per minute and had features that simplified production. A total of 7,000 examples of the Type 100/44 variant were built, but they were believed to have seen very little action, if any.Source: Ian Hogg, The Encyclopedia of Infantry Weapons of World War II ww2dbase
