In Jul 1941, he was made the acting party leader, succeeding LĂ©on Degrelle who had temporarily resigned to serve in the German Waffen-SS organization. In this role, he ordered the execution of 20 civilians in Courcelles in central Belgium as reprisals for anti-German resistance activities; this order would ultimate lead to his downfall from power as criticisms surfaced. After the war, he was found guilty of treason and was executed in 1947.
