ww2dbaseAlexander Gore Arkwright Hore-Ruthven was born in Windsor, Berkshire, Britain. He joined the British Army in 1898, and served in Egypt, Australia, and India before serving in France during WW1. In 1928, he was appointed Governor of South Australia, then 1934 New South Wales. In 1936, he was appointed Governor-General of Australia. During WW2, he played an important role in supporting British interests around the world with the Australian troops under his command; his own son, Patrick, was killed in action as a Commonwealth soldier in Libya in 1942. He returned to Britain in Sep 1944 and became Deputy Constable and Lieutenant-Governor of Windsor Castle. He died in May 1955 in Gloucestershire.
