ww2dbasePieter Sjoerds Gerbrandy was born near Sneek in the Netherlands. He was a professor in the 1930s and became active politically later that decade. He became the Minister of Justice in 1939, and year later fled with the royal family to London during the German invasion. In London, he was named the Prime Minister of the Dutch government-in-exile and was credited with the establishment of a radio station that broadcasted anti-occupation programs into the Netherlands. Immediately after liberation, he returned to the Netherlands and formed a new government, and resigned after the war. He retired from politics in 1956 after his personality alienated him from other members of the Dutch Parliament.
