ww2dbaseHerbert A. Mason was born to a commercial photographer in 1903. When WW2 began, he was under the employment of Associated Newspapers, but shortly after joined the British Royal Navy as a photographer. With the rank of lieutenant, he photographed North Atlantic convoys and the London Blitz. His photograph of smoke-shrouded St Paul's Cathedral of London, first published in the Daily Mail on 31 Dec 1940, became one of the most iconic images for the British people.
