This picture is of Maj Edward Thomas and his command group (1st Bn, 2d Regiment) of the First Special Service Force upon entering Rome the morning of June 04, 1944. I interviewed Thomas for my book The Black Devil Brigade and he specifically mentioned this photo. The photograph was staged for the photographer.
