17 May 1944	USS Astoria was commissioned into service with Captain George Dye in command.
20 Jun 1944	USS Astoria departed Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States for her shakedown cruise.
4 Jul 1944	USS Astoria remained at Port of Spain, Trinidad; her crew was allowed a short liberty in celebration of the Independence Day holiday of the United States.
16 Jul 1944	USS Astoria departed Trinidad for Puerto Rico.
20 Jul 1944	USS Astoria arrived at Hampton Roads, Virginia, United States.
