ww2dbaseIn 1905, the passenger ship Hessen was launched by the Tecklenborg shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany for the German shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd. In 1914, the ship sailed into Melbourne, Australia unware that WW1 had begun, and was seized. Australia used the ship as a troop transport under the name HMAT Bulla. During WW1, she made three trips between Australia and Europe, once as a troop ship, once as a cargo ship, and once as a transport for medical personnel. In 1918, she was transferred to the Commonwealth Government Line of Steamers. In 1926, she was sold to the German shipping company W. Schuchmann, which operated her under the name of Weissesee. In Jul 1943, during WW2, while at Hamburg, Germany, she came under attack by Allied aircraft and was sunk. Her wreck was raised in 1949 for scrapping.
