Demolished No. 3 5-inch gun mount aboard USS Nicholas shortly after 13 May 1943. During an early morning shore bombardment, the gun suffered a hang fire and the hot gun set off the shell inside the barrel. No casualtiesF4U-1 Corsair, an F4F Wildcat, and two TBF-1 Avengers run up their engines prior to launch from the training aircraft carrier USS Sable on Lake Michigan, United States, mid-1943.
