ww2dbaseWayne F. Miller was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States in 1918. He received his first camera as a high school graduation present from his parents. He studied banking at the University of Illinois at Urbana while working on the side as a photographer. Between 1941 and 1942, he studied at the Art Centre School of Los Angeles in California, United States. During WW2, he served as a photographer with the United States Navy Combat Photo Unit under Commander Edward Steichen; in this role, he became one of the first American photographers to capture post-war Japan, particularly the destruction of the city of Hiroshima. After the war, he returned to Chicago and became famous for the series titled "The Way of Life of the Northern Negro". After teaching at the Institute of Design in Chicago, he moved to Orinda, California, United States in 1953. In 1954, he was made the chairman of the American Society of Magazine Photographers. Between 1962 and 1966, he was the president of Magnum Photos. In 1970, he joined the Corporation for Public Broadcasting as executive director of the Public Broadcasting Environmental Centre. He retired from photography in 1975. He passed away in 2013.
