ww2dbaseDing Zhipan (Wade-Giles romanization: Ting Chih-pan) was born in Donghai County, Jiangsu Province, Qing Dynasty China. His birth name was Ding Jieshi (Wade Giles: Ting Chieh-shih) and courtesy name was Ding Shi'an (Wade-Giles: Ting Shih-an); he adopted the second courtesy name of Ding Zhipan when he joined the military in the final years of Qing Dynasty. In 1912, he graduated from the military academy of Jiangsu Province and joined the Beiyang Army. In 1927, he was successively promoted to the rank of major general and then lieutenant general. He joined the Nationalist military after the fall of the Beiyang government in 1928. In 1936, he was promoted to the rank of major general in the Nationalist Army. Between 1938 and 1941, he commanded the 41st Division in the first years of WW2. In 1939, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general. Between 1941 and 1945, he was the commanding officer of the 26th Army. Later in the war, he was made the deputy commanding officer of the 4th War Area, which covered Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces. During the Chinese Civil War, between 1945 and 1946, he was the deputy commanding officer of the 27th Army Group. Between 1946 and 1947, he was the commanding officer of the Qingdao Garrison in Shandong Province. Between 1947 and 1948, he was the commanding officer of the 11th Pacification Area. Between 1948 and 1949, he was the commanding officer of the 1st Pacification Area, the deputy commanding officer of the Nanjing-Shanghai-Hangzhou Garrison, and the Chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Government. After the relocation of the Republic of China to Taiwan, between 1955 and his death, he was a member of the Presidential Council on National Affairs. He passed away at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China in Mar 1988.
