ww2dbasePetr Georgievich Novikov joined the Russian Army in 1928. In 1937 and 1938, he served in Spain as an advisor to the Republican military during the Spanish Civil War. At the start of the war, he commanded the 241st Rifle Regiment of the 95the Rifle Division and fought with that unit at Odessa, Ukraine. He then commanded the 2nd Cavalry Division. On 23 Nov 1941, he was named the commanding officer of the 109th Rifle Division and the overall commander of the Defensive Sector I northeast of Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula in Southern Ukraine during the siege. When Sevastopol was about to fall, after Vice Admiral Filip Oktyabrsky fled the city, he briefly took over the command of the city's defense before seeking to flee himself by means of a cutter. The cutter was intercepted and captured by the Germans, and he was sent to the Flossenberg concentration camp, where he was executed by the SS some time in 1944.
