German Government to Compensate Ghetto Workers
On 19 Sep 2007, pushed by Chancellor Angela Merkel, the German government agreed to compensate forced laborers employed by the Nazi government during WW2 from the Jewish ghettos; they were to be given about US$2,797 each, and are estimated to be about 50,000 people. "The payment agreed today is not compensation for being interned in ghettos," government spokesperson Ulrich Wilhelm said at a news conference, "it's a humanitarian gesture."
