"We will defend the city, or die in the attempt". -Vasily Chuikov- COMMAND POST MEETING Russian General Vasily Chuikov, garrison commander is second from left, of the 62nd Army at Stalingrad. The other officers are not identified. The 62nd Army was later changed to the 8th Guards Army, and remained under the command of Gen.Chuikov until the Battle of Berlin in 1945.After Stalingrad he was in command of the 1st Belorussian front, led the advancethrough Poland, several times, his forces covered 40 miles in a single day. General Chuikov surived the war retired fromthe Army in 1972. He was later a consultantfor the Stalingrad battle memorial, and wasburied there after his death at age 82
