Famous WW2 Quote
"Among the men who fought on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue."Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, 16 Mar 1945

U-664 was attacked on the surface in a coordinated attack by two TBF-1 Avenger aircraft and one F4F-4 Wildcat fighter with Composite Squadron VC-1 flying from Card. This photo was taken after the attack had been broken off and the submarine was sinking when an Avenger pilot buzzed the conning tower. The swordfish emblem on the conning tower indicated the boat was part of the 9th Flotilla based in Brest, France.
