Seen here are the US Navy gray uniforms, an alternative to the Khaki's. The grays were a favorite of FAdm King but FAdm Nimitz hated them, so they were often seen around Washington DC but unofficially banned in the Pacific area. When King introduced the grays, braid on senior officers' caps was optional (we see King & his aide without it but VAdm Cooke & his aides with it). Sometime after these photos, King & Nimitz were leaving a hotel together (both wearing overcoats without insignia) and a press photographer pushed King aside saying, "Out of the way, Chief. I want a shot of the Admiral." Cap braid re-appeared a short time later.

Note FAdm King’s shoulder boards with the 5-star insignia. Since FAdm King was the only officer of 5-star rank willing to be seen in public wearing the Navy gray uniform, very few of these shoulder boards were produced and today are a very rare and collectible item.
