This burial at sea took place as Honolulu steamed from Tulagi to Espiritu Santo. Fireman 1st-class Irvin L. Edwards had enlisted in the Navy just one week after the Pearl Harbor Attack. He is reported to have died aboard USS Nicholas following his rescue from the sunken Helena. His body is seen here atop Honolulu’s aircraft hangar hatch. Note the SOC Seagull float plane on the catapult.
