  • In an one-on-one conversation between Adolf Hitler and Otto Skorzeny, Skorzeny narrated the kidnapping of Miklós Horthy, Jr. and the attack on Castle Hill in Budapest, Hungary on 15 Oct 1944. Later in the same conversation, Hitler revealed to Skorzeny the plans for the Ardennes Offensive and asked him to plan a commando operation behind enemy lines in captured uniforms. When questioned the legal concerns of wearing enemy uniforms, Hitler told him that German intelligence informed him that the Americans had done the same in the Aachen, Germany area.   • A Heinkel III aircraft from German Air Force 1/KG53 (5K+ER) crashed into the North Sea off Zandvoort, the Netherlands; one of the crew Obergefreiter Walter Hasler was drowned getting free on the aircraft, the rest were picked up. ww2dbase [North Sea | HM]
Australia Caroline Islands
  • USS Permit fired 2 torpdoes at a Japanese patrol craft at Truk, Caroline Islands; both torpedoes missed. ww2dbase [Permit | Truk | CPC]
  • The USAAF 306th Bomb Group flying from RAF Thurleigh launched a bombing raid against Hanover, Germany. On their return to Thurleigh, fog over England resulted in the 306th arriving over the airfield at the same time as the unseen B-17s of the 305th Bomb Group. As the planes made evasive maneuvers, two bombers from the 305th collided and exploded.   • The German 485 Mobile Artillery Detachment, responsible for launching V-2 rockets, arrived at the Hague, the Netherlands. United Kingdom
  • Belgian Florent Victor Paul Van Rolleghem, a Lancaster bomber pilot with No. 103 Squadron RAF based at RAF Elsham Wolds in Elsham, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom, was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) having flown 70 operations in 18 months and never once failing to bomb his target. ww2dbase [Elsham, England | AC]
  • Two V-1 flying bombs were brought down by British pilot Flight Officer Johnny Johnson.
