- While on station at the mouth of Lingayen Gulf near San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines, submarine USS Saury fired her first shot of the war. The torpedo was seen to head directly at the targeted Japanese destroyer, there was no explosion. An ineffective depth charge counter-attack followed. ww2dbase [Saury | Lingayen Gulf, Luzon | DS]
