Sturgeon Operational Timeline

30 Mar 1942 USS Sturgeon sank Japanese transport ship Choko Maru 20 miles southwest of Celebes, Dutch East Indies.
30 Jun 1942 USS Sturgeon detected Japanese passenger ship Montevideo Maru off northern Philippine Islands and began to give chase.
1 Jul 1942 USS Sturgeon sank Japanese passenger-cargo ship Montevideo Maru off northern Philippine Islands before dawn. The crew of Sturgeon did not realize that most of those aboard were Australian prisoners of war, nor was the ship marked in any way to indicate that she was carrying prisoners of war; all 1,054 prisoners perished in the sinking. Of the 88 Japanese crew members and armed guards, 68 were lost.

My father was on the uss sturgeon,I was wondering if anyone knew him
Frank Ratzlaff was his name and I’m trying to find out anything about him .he left my mother right after I was born & I curious about him

And never an apology or reparations that the Americans mass murdered over 1000 Australian allies. THe Americans love to hold every one else accountable other than themselves. The Captain should be shamed for the incompetent he was
