Having borrowed a great number of audio books from the local library in the recent months, I found myself slowly depleting its WW2-related audio books. To slow things down a bit, I decided to pick up two diversions the last visit, taking home something completely unrelated to WW2 and Daniel's Story. A children's novel that I initially came in contact with on my visit to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC, United States some years ago, Daniel's Story was centered around a fictional character, a child/teen, who observed the Holocaust from its outset in the 1930s through its end. Through the mind of the namesake character, the author described the differing reactions of Jews to the emergence of the Nazis (should they have fled the country or just ride it out?), life in the ghetto, and the harrowing death camps. Although the book was completely fictional, it was nevertheless a collection of very real things that had happened to real people.

Daniel Carpenter-Gold performed for this audio book. While his voice did not quite fit that of a teen, he did a great job with the reading.

While I would not claim to know much about children's novels, what I have gotten out of this book, backed up by the fact that the story formed the premise of an entire exhibit at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, led me to think Daniel's Story would be a good book to introduce youngsters to this sad chapter of human history.
