ww2dbaseNikolai Aleksandrovich Sbytov was the chief of Air Force Fighter Command of the Moscow Military District when the German forces neared the Soviet capital in 1941. When one of his fighter pilots spotted German vehicles scouting areas merely 50 kilometers from the city, he immediately reported it to his superiors. Unexpectedly, Sbytov found himself summoned by Viktor Abakumov of the NKVD, who interrogated him for disseminating false rumors. Luckly for Sbytov, Joseph Stalin believed this report, possibly saving him from imprisonment, exile, or even execution. Sbytov passed away in 1997.
