In Apr 1942, he was commissioned command of the carrier Akagi, and took her to the Battle of Midway. During that battle, a bomb from an American dive bombers started a fire in the after elevator which sparked off armed aircraft inside the hangar. The damage was deemed beyond repair, and as a result she was scuttled by a Japanese destroyer the next morning. Akagi was the first Japanese capital ship in WW2 to be scuttled by own ships. After Midway, Aoki became the commanding officer of the Kure Naval Arsenal. He retired from active service in Oct 1942.
ww2dbaseAfter the war, Aoki was interrogated by Captain C. Shands of the United States Navy on 9 Oct 1945 in Tokyo.
