ww2dbaseJulius Ochs Adler was born to Harry Clay Adler and Ada Ochs in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States in Dec 1892. He graduated from Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, United States in 1914, and then worked for the newspaper The New York Times, where his uncle Adolph Ochs held a high position. During WW1, he served in France with the 306th Regiment, US 77th Division. He was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant in Apr 1917 and captain in Aug 1917; he completed WW1 at the rank of major. In May 1919, he returned to The New York Times. In 1922, he married Barbara Stettheimer; they would have two daughters and a son. In 1923, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserve. In 1930, he was made a colonel in the reserve. In 1935, he succeeded this uncle as the newspaper's general manager. In Oct 1940, he was called on by the US Army. At Fort Dix, New Jersey, United States, he was made the commanding officer of the 113th Infantry Regiment. In Jul 1941, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. In Sep 1941, he was made assistant divisional commander of US 6th Infantry Division, in which role he saw service on New Guinea island. In Nov 1944, he was removed from the active roster due to illness; he would play no role for the remainder of WW2. After the war, he served as the commanding officer of 77th Division of the US Army Reserve between 1946 and 1948. In Jan 1948, he was promoted to the rank of major general. Between 1949 and 1951, he was the President of the Senior Army Reserve Commanders Association. In his civilian life, concurrent to his role as the general manager of The New York Times, he was the president of the newspaper The Chattanooga Times. He passed away in Oct 1955 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, United States.
