Between 1939 and 1941, he served with the training department responsible for training pilots and crew. During the Battle of Midway in Jun 1942, he served aboard the escort carrier Chitose with the Transport Force, with the responsibility of setting up a seaplane base either at Kure Atoll at the northern tip of the Hawaiian chain or at Eastern Island of Midway Atoll. Aboard Chitose, he also served during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in Aug 1942.
