ww2dbaseShizuya Hayashi was born in Waialua, Oahu, US Territory of Hawai'i to Japanese immigrants. He was drafted into the US Army in Mar 1941, reporting in at Schofield Barracks in Hawai'i. He later volunteered to join the 442nd Regimental Combat Team consisted mostly of Americans of Japanese ancestry. On 29 Nov 1943, near Cerasuolo in the Molise Region of Italy, Private Hayashi charged and overtook a German machine gun position. After his platoon advanced 200 yards from this point, an enemy antiaircraft gun opened fire on the men. He charged again and captured this second position. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for the day's action. In Jun 2000, the medal was upgraded to the Medal of Honor, US Military's highest award. He passed away in Mar 2008 and was buried at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
