On 26 May 1944, Second Lieutenant Lane A Ferrara, an American fighter pilot, had just taken off from Goxhill when an engine on his P38 Lightning caught fire; the big aircraft stalled and plummeted into the ground killing the young pilot instantly. In 1983 a group of local aviation enthusiasts recovered part of the aircraft, including a propeller which has now been incorporated into a memorial to all those who served there during the war.
