My Uncle died some years ago. However during his long life he worked for a company that had government contracts.
He told he worked with a Serviceman who refurbished damaged US Tanks during World War Two. Many of the tanks had men died in them and it was not a pretty sight.
The man told my father no matter how they worked to get the smell of death out of the tanks it was still there.
They would repaint the entire tank inside out but the smell was often there.
Also the new crews did not want to use a tank that another crew had died in. They considered it bad luck to be assigned to a refurbhished tank.
