B-17G chin turret, mounted twin .50 caliber
machine guns, w/ 365rpg, also installed on side mounts were added 50's
Total defensive firepower was thirteen .50
caliber weapons.With gross weight of 34 tons
it carried 6,380 rounds of ammo.
B-17G Models, had improved tail turret, and
installation of cheek mounts.
The B-17 Gunship:
To escort bomber formations, Lockheed Vega
developed the YB-40 loaded with 11,000 rounds
of .50 caliber ammo,for long range missions, and 17,300 rounds of ammo for short range missions.
The aircraft had double waist guns, with a
added a second power turret where the radio operators position used to be,chin turret that was later built into B17G Models.
This proved to be a failure, mainly because
it was heavy, and it could not keep up with
the standard B-17's
