Famous WW2 Quote
"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us... they can't get away this time."Lt. Gen. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, at Guadalcanal

These are ships of Task Group 38.4 as it was formed on 17 Aug 1945. The official US Navy caption for this photo identifies the USS Wasp (Essex-class) in the lower right with “five other Essex class carriers” but there are a total of only five fleet carriers in the photo, and one of them is not an Essex-class. The large carrier in the distance at far left is HMS Indefatigable, which was sailing with Task Group 38.4 at the time. The carrier just left of the center of the photo is the USS Shangri-La, force flagship of Vice-Admiral John S. McCain, and the other two are the USS Yorktown (Essex-class) and USS Bon Homme Richard. The battleship just beyond Wasp is almost certainly the USS Missouri, the fleet flagship of Admiral Halsey.
