Famous WW2 Quote
"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."Winston Churchill, on the RAF

There is a lot going on in this photograph. Note that the boat is dressed with her signal flags stretched from mast to stern. This marks a special occasion, in this case, the end of the war. Note also that Silversides is flying her extra-long “Going Home” pennant signifying she is headed back to the United States, which she was. Also, she is flying her Presidential Unit Citation pennant. On the cigarette deck (aft) is a Bofors 40mm cannon. Painted on the side of her conning tower are several things. First, the boat’s emblem is painted on the forward area. Her scoreboard claims 24 Japanese merchant ships and 5 warships sunk, 11 merchant ships and 4 warships damaged, 2 airmen rescued, and 16 mines destroyed.
