LAST OF THE BREED: THE P-51H
The North American P-51H was the last and fastest version of the famous P-51 Mustang.
The "H" Model weighted 40% less then a P-51D
used a thinner wing, light-weight airframe,
short 360 degree bubble canopy, shorter landing gear legs with smaller wheels.
The fuselage was 13 inches longer, with a taller vertical fin, new four-bladed propeller and was 50mph faster at 487mph could climb to 30,000ft in 12 minutes.
Armed with six fifty caliber machine guns
w/1880 rounds, 2x1,000lb bombs or rockets.
North American delivered 555 to the new post war USAF. To late to see service in WWII, and phased out before the Korean War, they were later transferred to the Air National Guard and served into the 1950s, until replaced by jet aircraft.
SURVIVORS:
Two are in museums, two are airworthy and one is under restoration.
