Note lack of elliptical wing tips, an easy friend/foe identifier of earlier Spitfire models.

Clipped wings were introduced on the MkV to give better low-level handling, the MkV entered service in 1941 though as Robert says this is a Griffin engined XII. The type first flew in 1942

This is a mk.12 Spitfire, the first of the Griffon-engined types to enter RAF service. It was used mainly to counter the 'tip and run' raiders - Focke-Wulf FW190 fighters attacking random targets along the south-east coast of England.
