JACK OF ALL TRADES: DORNIER DO217 NIGHTFIGHTER
In the night fighting role it was armed with both
machine guns and cannons. Usual armament would be
4 x 20mm MG/151 cannons w/250 rounds per gun,
4 x 7.92mm MG/17 machine guns w/1000 rounds per gun, and 2 x 13mm MG/131 machine guns located in the dorsal and ventral positions, w/500 rounds per gun.
Forward weapons were grouped together in a solid nose. Aircraft also had the R-22 installation of
2 or 4 x 20mm MG/151 cannons located in the upper fuselage (Schrage Musik) Jazz Music, and equipped with FuG 202 Lichtenstein radar.
THE ITALIAN JOB:
The Italians operated the Do217, night fighters the Luftwaffe transferred twelve aircraft to the
Regia Aeronautica, 41 Stormo, 60 Gruppo and served along side Italian crewed Messerschmitt Bf110G night fighters. Did you know the Swiss Air Force operated a Do217 that was interned until 1946.

Do 217 J-2 with FuG 202 Lichtenstein BC Radar. The Do 217's usually operated with Bf-110's in mixed units
