The official Navy caption for this photo identifies the location as Tulagi Harbor in the Solomon Islands. However, by 20 Jul 1943 (the date of this photo), USS St. Louis was at Espiritu Santo. USS Vestal, clearly seen in the photo, was at Espiritu Santo throughout the month of Jul 1943.

Cruisers USS Honolulu and HMNZS Leander were also damaged in the same action. In this photo, St. Louis is moored alongside repair ship USS Vestal marked R4.
