Boeing B-17G-50-DL Number 44-6405 of the
848th Bomb Squadron, 483rd Bomb Group
15th Air Force, completed 50 missions, check
out that nose art: portrait of FDR President
Franklin D. Roosevelt.
After VE Day she was converted to "Homebound Airlines", that used ex-combat aircraft returning to the USA, to transport ex-GIs
home.
Later she was used for Air-Sea Rescue work
the last flight was on December 28, 1945 to
Walnut Ridge, Arkansas.

Big Yank, pictured landing after the Berlin mission on March 24, 1945, became the most famous bomber of
the 483rd when the William S. Strapko crew shot down three ME-262 jet fighters that day. This was a
World War II combat record. Crew Chief Irvin H. Irv Davis directs Strapko to a parking space.
