In May 1938 3 Boeing YB-17's interecpted the Italian Ocean Liner Rex 610 miles at sea, the 51,100 ton ship was sighted at 12:25 pm the 3 bombers made a fly by. The Navigator on that mission was 1st. Lt. Curtis E. LeMay.
In 1944 the Rex was attacked by RAF aircraft hit by 123 rockets the ship caught fire, rolled to port, and sank in shallow water. After W.W.II the Rex was broken up at the site in 1947.

WE LAY ALONGSIDE H.M.S.Colombo who lay alongside the sunken REX in 1945.We were supplying MTB'S who were (clearing)out shiping in the northern islands of the Adriatic.They left every evening and returned in the mornig badly shot up,brave young men.

After the Italian liner Rex was interecpted,
610 miles from the U.S., The War Department restricted the Army to within 100 miles of
the US Costline.

Curtiss LeMay was the Navigator, who plotted the intercept course, and met the Italian liner Rex.
