I owe my life to that Kamikaze pilot, the pilot he killed was my mothers first husband Fred. she later married my dad.

Within a minute of this photo being taken, the Zero crashed into the Avenger on top of Suwannee’s forward elevator. Both planes exploded on impact. The Avenger pilot, Lt Frederick Beidelman, and both of his crew members were listed as “missing.” The ship’s elevator platform was smashed down to the hangar deck level. 39 were killed aboard Suwannee and 78 were wounded.
