This is a British War Office photo with a caption on the back of the photo card that reads, in part: “British Official Photograph. ... General Montgomery Backs His 8th Army - And Wins A Flying Fortress. As a sequel to a wager made some weeks ago with an American General [W. Bedell Smith] that the 8th Army would be in Sfax by the 15th April, 1943, General Montgomery, G.O.C. 8th Army, was presented with a Flying Fortress. The General inspected the plane at an Aerodrome in North Africa on the afternoon of April 17th.”
Sources vary on the fate of this aircraft. Certainly it was damaged in a landing accident in Sicily and left British service at that time but most sources agree the plane returned to USAAF service as a training aircraft with the 92nd Bomb Group at Bovingdon, United Kingdom and was written off in Jun 1945.
