U-1229 was first observed on the surface but submerged and extended her schnorkel. Aerial depth charges then forced her to the surface again without retracting the schnorkel. Photographs taken during these attacks gave the US Navy the best look at the schnorkel they had up to that point. Note what appears to be the track of a FIDO homing torpedo beginning its run.
