The full names, branches, and ranks of these officers are, left to right, Royal Navy Fleet Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham, United States Army General Dwight D. Eisenhower, United States Navy Vice Admiral Henry K. Hewitt, and United States Army Major General Walter Bedell Smith. The occasion for this gathering was the relief of FAdm Cunningham as Naval Commander in Chief in the Mediterranean so he could assume the position of First Sea Lord following the resignation of Sir Dudley Pound.
