B-24J “Shootin’ Star” of US 14th Air Force, 308th Bomb Group, 374th Bomb Squadron. Missing Air Crew Report #11163 says, “Plane 42-73249 departed Luliang, China, at 1030 hours, 12 January 1945, on long range reconnaissance mission to South China Sea and Indo-China coast. No further contact since take-off.” 10 KIA. Marine Corsair pilots flying from USS Essex reported the aircraft initially reported the downed aircraft was an “Emily” (Kawinishi H8K 4-engine flying boat) and that “the plane was unmarked except for camouflage paint and responded to questioning maneuvers and signals with gunfire only.”

David Stubblebine, thank you for posting this. Could you tell me how I can get the Missing Report #11163 if you don't mind ? I thought it was a PB4Y as the AAR indicated. I did not know that Liberators for 14th A.F. flew over cam Ranh area during Jan. 1945. Reagrds, Minoru, Tokyo, Japan
