I may be mistaken, but I think that this photo is of the Lexington CV3 hangar deck. Thus the #3 on the fuselage of all the planes. Not the Enterprise CV6.

You’ve made a fair observation but I think this is the Enterprise. The official Navy caption for this photo says it was aboard the Enterprise (not that they haven’t been wrong before) and one of the innovative features of the Yorktown-class, like Enterprise, over the Lexington-class was the ability for overhead storage in the hangar deck, like what we see here. The 3-F numbers on the airplanes refers to Fighter Squadron 3, which was embarked on Enterprise at this time. You will note the SBD fuselage in the overhead is marked 2-S-8, which indicates it was part of Scouting Squadron 2, also aboard Enterprise at the time. There was a time that carrier squadron numbers matched the ship’s hull number, but by this time that practice was no longer being followed. It’s good that you’re paying attention to these details and we are not above making mistakes from time to time so thank you for taking the time to submit your comment.
